“Math Homework Hotline,” a favorite with students, airs at 4:30 p.m. every Wednesday on DPS TV (Time Warner Cable Channel 21).
The station recently launched the first episode of the new school year. The live call-in show, in its 27th season, is designed for DPS students, who phone in each week to get homework help and receive giveaways.
Teacher and co-host Adre Daniels (Stivers) works problems along with callers, illustrating each step of the problem-solving process.
“Math Homework Hotline” is a joint production. Ken Kreitzer, team leader for DPS TV and WDPS FM, hosts; Sharon Miller (Horace Mann) does sign language translation; and Ponitz staff members (Deb Pitstick, Jennifer Bryant, Scott Marshall and Pat Battle) handle production and coordinate the show’s student crew.
The show has received local and national recognition for excellence, including Hometown USA, regional Philo Awards and three Telly Awards.
Students who operate the cameras on the set are part of the arts and communications pathway (one of four career pathways) at Ponitz Career Technology Center, where DPS TV studio is located. In keeping with the district’s strategic goal of high-quality education, Ponitz CTC prepares students to be college and career ready.
