September 20, 2011
Contact: Jill Moberley, Public Information Officer
For Immediate Release
Students will not attend school on Wednesday, Sept. 28; it is a professional development day for staff.
While students have the day off, DPS educators will spend the day learning more about the rigorous new common core standards the state will adopt in the 2013-2014 school year and how to prepare students for success.
Today’s kindergarten students will be the first to take the new common core assessments, and today’s middle school students will have to pass standardized tests based on the common core standards in order to graduate from high school.
Educators will begin the day in a general session from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and will select an afternoon session scheduled from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at one of five locations.
Support staff, too, will be training on new student information system software and sharpening their skills to deliver student-related services that support effective teaching and learning across the district.
The districtwide professional development day is a Race to the Top initiative.
