
Read Across America in DPS schools

This Friday (March 2) marks the start of another fun-filled book-stravaganza, as Dayton Public Schools and other districts across America celebrate Read Across America Day.
Sponsored by the Dayton Education Association and Dayton Public Schools, Read Across America Day features a wide variety of reading-themed activities in district schools, including community volunteers and area dignitaries reading to students.
Here are some of the readings taking place across the district on Friday:
• DPS Superintendent Lori L. Ward will read to students at River’s Edge Montessori (108 Linwood St.) at 9:30 a.m.; Wright Brothers (1361 Huffman Ave.) at 11 a.m.; and Charity Adams Earley Girls Academy (440 Shoup Mill Road) at 12:30 p.m.
• Also at Earley Girls Academy, the school will kick off the day beginning at 9:30 a.m. with “Salute to Seuss,” a musical production by third- and fourth-grade students. For more information, call 542-5840.
• At Kemp PreK-8 (1923 Gondert Ave.), WHIO TV morning anchor/reporter Natasha Williams (10:30 a.m.) and husband Dayton City Commissioner Joey Williams will read to students. Also reading to classes are County Commissioner Debbie Lieberman (10 a.m.), State School Board Member Jeffrey J. Mims Jr., Dayton Human Relations Council Assistant Director Catherine Crosby (2 p.m.), and several Wright State and University of Dayton basketball players. Students will enjoy a special visit from The Cat in the Hat (aka art teacher Stacy Maney). For more information, call 542-5090.
• Edison PreK-8 (228 N. Broadway St.) will welcome community partners from Standard Register to read to students in grades kindergarten through fifth, from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. For more information, call 542-4540.
• Belle Haven PreK-8 (4401 Free Pike) also will host readers from around the community, including Montgomery County Commissioner Debbie Lieberman, Jeffery Payne from the Dayton Fire Department, Sharon Howard from the Dayton Development Coalition; Dayton Board of Education President Ron Lee, Vice President Joe Lacey, and members Nancy Nerny, Sheila Taylor, Stacy Thompson and Yvonne Isaacs; Dayton Daily News columnist Amelia Robinson, and others. • Rotary Club members will read to students at Louise Troy PreK-8 (1630 Miami Chapel Road), and students will enjoy a special guest reading from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. by The Cat in the Hat, along with Thing One! For more information, call 542-4290.
• EJ Brown PreK-8 (31 Willowwood Drive) will host Stephan Marcellus and John Parker with the City of Dayton Recreation and Youth Services Department; Valerie McIntosh, City of Dayton Planning and Community Development, as well as several school volunteers and community supporters. • River’s Edge Montessori also will host Dayton Mayor Gary Leitzell (at 1:30 p.m.), Dayton Education Association president David Romick (10 a.m.), Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department SWAT team commander Major Darryl Wilson (9:30 a.m.), and many community partners. • At Wogaman PreK-8 (920 McArthur Ave.), Rev. Laurie Brubaker-Davis of Westminster Presbyterian Church will read to students in Deb Lloyd’s K-2 intensive needs students beginning at 12:15 p.m. For more information, call 542-5890.
• At Horace Mann PreK-8 (715 Krebs Ave.), Dayton City Commissioner Nan Whaley will read to students at 9:15 a.m., and Dayton Board of Education member Yvonne Isaacs will read at 11 a.m. For more information, call 542-4890.
• Union Bank employees will read to students at Wright Brothers PreK-8 (1361 Huffman Ave.), along with ABC 22/Fox 45 meteorologist Jeff Booth (at 1:30 p.m.) and many DPS employees. For more information, call 542-5940.
• Cleveland PreK-8 (1102 S. Pursell Ave.) will feature Mayor Gary Leitzell, County Commissioner Dan Foley, and WDTN TV reporter Megan O’Rourke reading to students, during an 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. block.
