DPS summer programs begin June 11

As the 2011-2012 school year draws to a close, many DPS students are getting ready to head back to class again this summer. Students will participate in a number of programs designed to give elementary students a boost in the arts, literacy, science and math, and provide English as a Second Language (ESL) learners with extra enrichment opportunities, among others.

Extended-year programs include the following:

SIG Schools Instructional Lab (June 11-28, EJ Brown and Westwood; June 4-28, Fairview) Classes in math and language arts enrichment will be offered to students in grades prekindergarten through seven at Westwood (2805 Oakridge Drive), EJ Brown (31 Willowwood Drive) and Fairview (2314 Elsmere Ave.)  preK-8 schools, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Breakfast and lunch are provided. Students must attend one of these schools to be eligible. For more information, contact the schools listed.

Early Warning Schools Instructional Lab (June 11-28) Classes in math and language arts enrichment will be offered to students in grades prekindergarten through three at Wogaman (902 McArthur Ave.), Louise Troy (1630 Miami Chapel Road) and Rosa Parks (3705 Lori Sue Ave.) preK-8 schools, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Breakfast and lunch are provided. Students must attend one of these schools to be eligible. For more information, contact the schools listed.

PLACE Summer Academy (June 11-29) Classes offered for students that are currently displaced or have been displaced during the 2011-2012 school year. Students in grades kindergarten through eight are eligible to attend this reading enrichment program, from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at River’s Edge Montessori (108 Linwood St.) Transportation, breakfast and lunch are provided. This program is not open to the public, and students are preselected. For more information, contact Deborah Carroll at 542-3299.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Summer Program (June 11 – July 29) This program will provide summer enrichment for refugees, newcomers and at-risk ESL students in grades kindergarten through eight, with assistance in language proficiency for academic and social settings. Classes are offered at River’s Edge PreK-8, 108 Linwood St., from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Transportation, breakfast and lunch are provided. Summer Instructional Lab (July 16 – August 3) This program is available district-wide to students entering grades kindergarten through fourth to receive enrichment and extra help in reading and math. The program will be held at Wright Brothers (1361 Huffman Ave.) and Edison (228 N. Broadway St.) preK-8 schools. For more information, contact Cassandra Ward at 542-3536.

SIG Ninth-Grade Transition Program (July 16 – August 3, Belmont; June 11-29, Dunbar; July 15 – August 3, Meadowdale HS; July 16 – August 10, Thurgood Marshall) This program provides assistance to incoming ninth-grade students on making the transition to high school. Times are to be announced for each location. Breakfast and/or lunch is provided. For more information, contact individual schools listed.

Digital Summer School (Credit Recovery) (June 13 – July 13) Computer-based instruction for selected high school courses offers credit recovery opportunities for students in need of credits to graduate.  Classes are offered from 7:25 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Ponitz Career Technology Center, 741 Washington St.  Courses include algebra, physical science, chemistry, biology, geometry, history, government and language arts 9-12.  Breakfast and lunch are provided. Tuition is $150 for a half-credit and $175 for a full credit for DPS students. For non-DPS students, tuition for a half-credit is $175 and $225 for full credit. Tuition (money order only, nonrefundable) will be accepted at the DPS Student Assignment Office, located at 115 S. Autism Summer Camp (June 11 – July 29) – This program provides services for identified special needs school-age students in grades prekindergarten through two who have individual education plans.  Activities center on maintenance of academic, communication and motor skills. Classes are offered at River’s Edge PreK-8, 108 Linwood St., from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  Transportation, breakfast and lunch are provided. There is no open enrollment for this program.

STEM Summer Science Camp (July 9-13, students currently in grades 2-4; June 25-29, students currently in grades 5-7) This program offers an integrated, inquiry-based STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) instruction. The goal is to increase the number of students passing the science OAT (Ohio Achievement Test) in grades two through eight. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.; breakfast and lunch are provided. Classes are offered at the Challenger Learning Center, next to Kiser PK-8 School, 1401 Leo St. This camp is open to DPS students only. For more information, contact Marijane Recob at 542-6143.

Ohio Youth Robotics Camp (June 18-22) Students 9 to 14 years old are encouraged to participate in this camp. Campers will learn to build and program First Lego League robots and learn the principles of competition teams. A competition will be held on Friday, with prizes awarded to the winning team. Hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Campers are to pack their lunch; drink and a snack are provided. Cost is $185. Registration deadline:  June 8. Stivers Summer Arts Camp – (June 11-22) More than 25 classes spanning the visual and performing arts will be offered in morning and/or afternoon sessions (9-11:30 a.m., noon to 2:30 p.m.) Students completing grades three through 12 will find a variety of classes to meet their interests and abilities. Classes in piano, strings, painting, drawing, photography, ceramics, musical theatre, and opera, dance, jazz and much more are offered. Registration and payment can be made online at www.stivers.org.
